Nell, Simon, and their 3 sons are ready to welcome friends and family for what promises to be a perfect Christmas gathering. Perfect except for one thing: everyone is going to die.

This is a film. You should know as a little about before you watch it and let yourself be surprised by it that way it can be rewarding for you.

This is a dark comedy with a surprise ending that you don’t necessarily see coming, especially with this material. Which can be subtle but does leave a sting.

As a perfectly mixes, the joy and melancholy of the holidays. As a time of joy camaraderie, but also a time of darkness, especially if not feeling that particular joy and still feel a certain loneliness or emptiness

The film starts off at typical if not cynical, though eventually you find out the downside or tragedy of what brings all the characters together. Even though there are at the beginning.

We get to see the characters go through the emotions as it dawns on them what is coming and have to face their own mortality and their past. The film surprisingly has them talking about each other, but never becoming vicious or revealing secrets that would normally tear them apart, which would direct the film into a more territory. it to be point and somewhat realistic.

The drama of it all gets to you in the audience that has its fair share of humor that comes more naturally as some secrets are revealed.

What is that? The film isn’t reliant on one thing it’s the mixture of elements that works. The same way with the cast it’s an ensemble no real stars, though wish some of the cast members or other characters had more to do than what they are given here mainly Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

This is a film, where the melancholy hangs in the air no matter how light some scenes or the atmosphere might be.

When the heart is introduced, it gets dark and all the more real thou it is a release of the underlying tension that the film has been building up.

Soon as you see  Roman Griffin Davis in this film, you should know it’s a tragedy or whoever is playing his mother won’t survive. So far his career highlights have been this and JOJO RABBITT. so usually a quirky dark comedy. Though he is also the film’s director’s son 

Ultimately, the film has a climate change message and is very subtle with its theme and provocations. Especially when it comes to science and the government also the establish class and youth culture.. 

I’m surprised this film is more popular as it is a gem

BOSTON STRANGLER (2023)

Loretta McLaughlin was the reporter who first connected the murders and broke the story of the Boston Strangler. She and Jean Cole challenged the sexism of the early 1960s to report on the city’s most notorious serial killer.


The film is well shot almost like an episode of the show MINDHUNTER. This might be why it feels like an R-rated tv-movie, but it lacks the drama, tension, and strength of that television show. 

In fact, it ends up representing those made for cable movies of the 1990s and 2000s. That was meant to be an event. where they got an all-star or established cast of recognizable names.

The movie plays like it’s own version of SHE SAID, though instead of tackling the Harvey Weinstein case. There is two female reporters who are looked down upon. One established and one rookie, cracking a case wide open that established reporters didn’t. As they are even the first to notice a pattern. 

Similar to that film we get to see their domestic lives while also tackling this story. Only here Kiera Knightley gets more screen time. As the rookie and how this case is also disrupting her domestic situation. 

The film short changes Carrie Coon a bit. As she is the mentor to Knightley’s character. We learn a bit less about her. She also doesn’t have as much screen time or moments. 

I can admit so far I have never been a fan of the movies based on this true crime case. Including the film THE BOSTON STRANGLER from 1968 

Directed by Richard Fleischer and starred Henry Fonda, Tony Curtis, and George Kennedy. Though that movie focused more on the killer and the police detectives. 

As a true crime movie, you could easily look up the case to discover the ending as well as the ins and outs. What the film does actually do successfully is offered up the surprise of the suspects and the realization of how many men got away with murder using the M.O. of the strangler, but when not being able to be linked with the other crime of the strangler were let go.

As towards the end, a character pretty much defines what the movie is about and sums up the point of this dramatization. Which is the changing times and realizations of things either kept hidden, quiet or never acknowledged. That was unfortunately showing that society could never go back to being so innocent. 

Though the film at least offers some hope for two female reporters challenging the status quo and finding courageousness and leading a way for females in the future. Even as they are pretty much the prey out there at that time.

LONDON BOULEVARD (2010)

Fresh out of prison, Mitchel wants nothing to do with crime but accepts a kip from Billy, a marginal grafter, and accompanies Billy on rent collection trips. He’s also old school, wanting revenge on two youths for assaulting a mendicant he’s befriended. He’s got a strung-out sister to protect, and he’s offered a job protecting a famous actress from paparazzi. The plot lines join when Michael finds himself attracted to the actress and Billy’s Mob boss, Gant, finds ways to force Michael work for him. He also warns Michael off revenge against the assailants of his friend. What are Michael’s options: is there any way to avoid Gant, protect his sister, and find a path to love?
