When a once-fabled campfire tale becomes real, a group of campers uncover a profound secret that questions their very existence.

First off want to thank screen-centered.com aka Myriamtalksaloy  for her initial review and recommendation of this film

A lot of movie fans say that there is no originality out there. Well, I am glad to say this film proves them wrong because what starts out as a typical summer camp/or film evolves into something totally different and original.

Which is why I would suggest watching the film blind, before reading this review, because there will be spoilers and hints towards what happens and where it goes.

I truly enjoyed this film, especially because of what it was able to do which was keep you guessing and throw me off quite a few times. It offers the traditional coming-of-age summer camp story, but then adds in something a bit different.

As the film plays like a horror film specifically for kids while being a typical summer camp horror film, with characters a bit younger than expected. Then it offers twist upon twists, that feed upon each other. that it could almost play or be a GOOSEBUMPS tale as I’m sure many will compare to an M night shamalayan film

If you go, expecting something he’ll be able to pick up on the choice sooner and faster. One is quite surprised by some reactions.

As just because if it has a twist ending, doesn’t mean we should label it as instantly M night. Shamalayan rip off as this place is better that some of his film story wise.(though he has a better eye as a director and sensationalize his material a lot more. Which then makes you expect the twist.)

This is a tricky film as it did surprise and entertain, but it didn’t amaze or offer the same level of production or direction as the film has a good idea in decent filmmaking, though it doesn’t come off as memorable

Now the film seems aimed at kids featuring very little violent, though there is violence and a little exploitation, as it does offer a sexy, no nudity and not as graphic as it could’ve been, but it’s there. As this comes off almost as a more violent AMBLIN movie type tale. Not necessarily distinct though the story is. Though the problem would be if it was more distinct, it might tip off the audience.

Why are so many complaining. it’s not stupid and backs itself up with its twist and turns as it goes in many directions sometimes opposing each other, but feel it is more growing in those create and show the pains of it. Which can happen in world building, though by the end it feels fresh and enjoyable tale.

The problem  is that we as movie goers and audience is complained. There is nothing new or that there’s no originality then when we get some bitch about the so-called plot holes and problems or nitpick it to death, yet support the same old stories only done more modern with bigger names behind the scenes, and we tend to pray over praise when something is decent and does its job as more and more today it seems such a rarity for a film really to be that way so that when something is good, we give it too much credit and treat it like it’s great when actually, it might be average at best. depending on your basis of what makes a good movie or what you score a movie on or by that would definitely recommend this film as it touches all the bases

The film is modern yet seems more 1980s inspired. It switches gears with each new discovery, but does it with subtlety,

I’m going to need a sequel to this film ASAP before the characters and kids age out. Which should be easy based on what is hinted at in the finale.

THE RE-EDUCATION OF MOLLY SINGER (2023)

Directed By: Andy Palmer

Written By: Todd M. Friedman and Kevin Haskin

Cinematography: Filip Vandewal

Editor: Tim Rush

Cast: Britt Robertson, Nico Santos, Ty Simpkins, Cierra Ramirez, Jamie Pressly, Holland Roden, Zach Scheerer, Paul Soter, Emma Holzer, Carlos Alazraqui, Jonathan Lipnicki, Wendie Malick

To save her job, a young lawyer must go undercover, enrolling as a freshman at her old alma mater, in order to resuscitate the well-being of her Boss’ terribly awkward teenage son.

This film does have similarities to the recent Jennifer Lawrence starring movie NO HARD FEELINGS” wow that one was certainly raunchy yet had a certain innocence. This one tries to be dirty but still comes out kind of more teen-friendly.

Have no idea whether this film came first or no hard feelings came first if one copied the other, though both films are very different. This one feels a little more generic. it’s like the no-frills brand. It feels like a carbon copy with no flare. It feels like it should be trying but it’s not and it really needs help.

While the film does have its risky parts in trying to give a full version of a little bit of the party lifestyle of college. I was a bit shocked, considering who the audience for this film seems to be that it went to certain lengths. it still stays in certain perimeters that feel like it will most audiences.

This is not a film you really watch for artistic quality it’s more of a feel-good movie that simply gets to the point it’s very predictable, but it entertains fully throughout.

Lead actress Britt Robertson is one of those actresses who always seems to play in these films. She always seems to be the lead and films that are OK, but not good, and usually, She’s one of the best things in them, but then when she’s in more of a studio film, she usually is in a supporting role and she shines. Even as she just can’t seem to find the right material that would truly make her a star that would. At least she’s solid in everything that she appears in.

Just like actor, Nico Torres always seems to play the wildly, gay, best friend, in all of these Netflix-branded films. I mean it works and he has one of the most hilarious scenes in the film. though, I wouldn’t mind seeing him play. A different role shows a bit of range, but get where you fit in.

This film does have or commits to a cliché, While I admire it for being risqué to a certain extent it also has this plot point where the romantic rival for the girl who the nice guy likes and has chemistry with is always a jerk, but the film doesn’t even try to make the jerk nuanced. He’s just bad news from frame one, so you don’t see any of the charms that made the girl fall for him in the first place and maybe only shows the side when he’s not around her or when there is a rival. it would be one thing if the film at least was truthful and maybe she sees attitude-wise why this guy doesn’t work and maybe even personality but she’s just attracted to him and is trying to find something deeper than that to justify her dating and staying.

This happens all the time in high school in movies and even regular rom-coms when the guy is just attracted to a girl more physically and stays around even though eventually wises up, I just wonder why in these types of movies when the girl is dating a jerk it is always unexplainable other than looks why she stayed with him in the first place.

Even the montage makeover scene does not come off as fun, but kind of lame as it just seems like they just dress him more plaid than before. It also doesn’t help. The only thing that seems to be wrong with the man she’s here to make over is that he’s awkward and shy, but he has boy-good looks and looks way too old to be a college student like most of the cast.

It is particularly funny in scenes when all the college students remark on the age of the two lead characters, even though they look about the same age themselves none of them college age.

While most of the film’s material is generic it stays entertaining and the cast truly tries to liven it up. They give it their all you just wish that there was a film to match that energy and skill maybe some stronger jokes too. Even the third act feels so ridiculous.

WATCHING THE DETECTIVES (2007)

Written & Directed By: Paul Soter
Cinematography By: Christophe Lazenberg
Editor: Jeff Canavan
Music By: Nathan Barr

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Lucy Liu, Jason Sudeikis, Heather Burns, Ali Reza, Steve Lemme, Erik Stolhanske, Brett Gelman, Callie Thorne, Josh Pais, Lonny Ross, Paul Scheer, Josh Gad

Neil, a self-proclaimed film geek, and owner of Gumshoe video, has always been content to live vicariously through his favorite film noir. But when he meets Violet, a real-life femme fatale, his mundane world gets turned upside down and the line between reality and the movies quickly begins to blur. Will Neil step up and embrace a life full of adventure or retreat back to his comfortable couch?

The title of the film is taken from a 1977 Elvis Costello song, from the album “My Aim Is True”. An offbeat romantic comedy with Cillian Murphy whose character runs a video store. When one day Lucy Liu comes to rent some films. Through a matter of cons. She gets him To take her out to dinner, throughout the rest of the film they date and get to know each other. The only problem is, she is always coming up with elaborate situations and stories to test his reactions. Soon he can’t tell what is real and what’s make-believe. This is an interesting concept pulled off somewhat successfully.

I like this movie and I could have given it a better grade. The premise is unpredictable ad constantly keeps you on your toes, but it comes off for some reason rather bland

It just feels like it never truly comes alive as much as it could. Especially with so many recognizable names cast. If it had been made more with lesser-known actors it would be excusable and charming, but watching it you have a constant feeling that everyone knows better.

The movie ends up feeling like it never reaches its full potential. Not because of its low budget but maybe. Like ALLY MCBEAL some things seemed quirky for no other reason than just to be quirky. Also, some scenes just seem to lay there limp, but for a movie that’s so quirky the supporting characters could have been a bit more interesting. Or at least better dialogue. I liked them but there really seemed to be no reason for them or they didn’t feel like complete characters. They could have been extras who showed up that day and got lucky.

The film is an offbeat romantic comedy. It’s like a subdued screwball comedy. Situated in the real world.

Cillian Murphy is a good actor but I don’t know if the role was underwritten or he worked with what he had or was internationally trying to underplay his character to be more subtle, but he seems iffy miscast. Lost when not having any motivations or maybe an actorly distraction. His character needed to be a little more broad.

Lucy Liu though is a doll not totally a manic pixie dream girl, but a bored dream girl looking for an adventure and doubling as a femme-fatale for a mystery she is creating. I’m happy to see her change up her roles. Playing more softer, nice, happy characters. Instead of the ice queens, she usually has played to perfection In the past. I really like her as an actress and feel she deserves more work.

I know it sounds like I’m bad-mouthing the film but I liked it. It’s probably more me. I just expected more from it.

The film’s director Paul Soter is a member of the comedic improv group Broken Lizard who made the films SUPER TROOPERS, CLUB DREAD, BEERFEST,  and THE SLAMMIN SALMON. So we know he knows comedy as being funny on fact 2 other members Steve Lemme and Erik Stolhanske of the troupe make cameos. His direction is subtle, but needs to be a bit more colorful and pick up the pace, it’s a good movie definitely one you should check out
