DIE MY LOVE (2025)

Grace, a writer and young mother, is slowly slipping into madness. Locked away in an old house in and around Montana, we see her acting increasingly agitated and erratic, leaving her companion, Jackson, increasingly worried and helpless.


Jennifer Lawrence gives a phenomenal performance that is raw animalistic and amazing more physical than verbal as that is what the script calls for so she just morphs into the role and is a sensation

Though sadly, she is more interesting and truly the highlight of the movie as the movie is not bad, but she is clearly the star in the heart of the film, even with a stacked cast she’s the only one who makes an impression and stays memorable

Now be warm this film is very dark and very depressing throughout. There are very few if any moments of joy and none that I can truly remember. 

Now I knew what I was getting into when it came to watching this as most of Director Lynne Ramsey‘s movies are intense sad and mostly joyless. I’m not saying that is a bad thing. It’s just that, that is the mood and vibe that they give off they can be quite depressing and this film is no exception. They like the main character and maybe this was intentional. The film also feels a little lost.

As it plays, this feels like the film NIGHTBITCH with Amy Adams strive to be or at least make the audience feel like, whereas, even though that film is more of a satire that involve postpartum depression this film is definitely a drama showing the ravages of postpartum depression only revealing through flashbacks that not only to this character might have had mental problems already, but it seems like everyone around her is also breaking down in their own way. They both have many similarities as both protagonists are artists of some kind. Who begin to exhibit animal type behavior.

We see that the relationship seemed kind of rushed from the beginning, and that both characters were always impulsive and now that they are need to be more responsible Lawrence his character does not seem prepared or ready for it or as Robert Pattinson‘s character does but doesn’t want to take on all the responsibilities either

As like in the film night, bitch, he comes across as careless and not at all helpful and expecting her to take on everything

Just as with the main character film plays with time where sometimes we’re not sure exactly where we are in the timeline of their relationship exactly where they are and sometimes if what we’re seeing is real, we’re all in her head

Which is shown to be faulty as in a scene when she sees her neighbor who always rides a motorcycle at a supermarket with his wife and disabled child at first, we believe she’s going to talk to him to help her with a flat tire. Then we realize nose, some weird fantasy that she had of talking to as he represents temptation even though doesn’t really have any lines throughout the film.

Speaking of which Nick Nolte is in the film as Robert Patterson‘s father, who is slowly losing his cognizance and seems to be in a film for only five minutes before he’s gone, which is a shame as he has a screen legend and was hoping that he’d have more time on screen and more things to do, though  Sissy Spacek as Lawrence‘s mother-in-law is powerful in her scenes

As she seems to be having her problems after her husband‘s recent death, but still can hold it together and seems to understand what Lawrence‘s character is going through, but wants her to take responsibility and kind of snap out of it even while having sympathy for her

One can’t see who this film’s audience really is as it got a very low cinema score, but it is good filmmaking that is more experimental and doesn’t hold the audience‘s hand. What’s the where it goes and leaves them to interpret it however they will as the last 15 minutes of the film, which so far has been a buildup is truly worth the film. Let’s loose and becomes all the more powerful.

As even though the film does offer some surprises before we reach that point, it’s never as strong as the ending just as a strong and deeply felt Jennifer Lawrence‘s performances. The rest of the film just isn’t as strong as you constantly wonder where it’s going.

CANNERY ROW (1982)

A depressed section of Monterey, California, known as Cannery Row from its string of now-empty canning plants is the backdrop for an offbeat romantic comedy about a pair of mismatched lovers. Doc is a lonely marine biologist (and former baseball star) who supplies specimens for science labs and classrooms. Suzy is a scrappy drifter who can’t even succeed as a prostitute because of her abrasive manner. When the two get together, it’s fireworks, though not the romantic kind. Not to worry, everything is in the hands of Cannery Row’s resident guardian angels, Mack and the boys, a band of drunken derelicts whose hearts are in the right place, even though their brains are not.


The film is atmospheric and feels enriched in culture but like John Steinbeck’s writing, it is based. It feels dull yet full of depth. It is a particular slice of life. 

The film has certain scenes that are full of charm and feel inventive. As well as a romance that feels like it takes place in real-time.

The character feels full and lived in and not necessarily caricatures. Where you could actually set stories around them individually. Which the film tries to do by giving them each time to shine. 

Debra winger comes off as charming. Especially as we learn more about her as the film goes along.

The film offers itself up more as a slice of life that feels like not too much happens. Thought the film will have A scene that will wake you up and then go back to being mundane. As the film in exchange for feeling lived in, never decides what or where it wants to go or to be.

Frank McRae plays another stereotypical mentally simple role but is meant to be more the lovable giant. This might be one of the first times he played the type. Before moving on to angry police captains in other films. 

The film feels like POPEYE the movie spin-off with a whole new set of characters but leftover similar sets.

As the film feels episodic. The film feels like a set of short stories coming Together to tie together the ensemble and focus on friendships and relationships.

Each character is lived in and feels like they have more to offer. As the film has scenes of absolute slapstick ingenuity and a hard-won romance.

One can see why the film might not have been a success, but also easily can be seen as a product of a bygone era. Even as the time period shows this more as a character-heavy periodic, episodic, and ensemble finding the story, character and themes 

This film works like that invention from the beginning of PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE. Where we see the invention and its mechanics, the nuts and bolts of it all, and are amazed at its assembly d how it works as it seems to put in a lot of synchronization for it all to work at certain intervals. 

Even entertaining to watch themselves until finally at the end. All of that for something so simple. Where the mechanics are more interesting or captivating than the act. A lot of work for something basic, that is how this film feels.

TEACHERS (1984)

A teacher overcomes his frustration in a high-school full of flunkies. As he attempts to educate his students, he attempts to help them gets him into trouble with the school board, which only adds to his problems. With the support of his students, he beats the school board and his frustration.


This film is in the same vein as AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Where it is a darkly satirical look at a system that wasn’t working. For that film, it was legal and the justice/court system. In this case public high school and just how dangerous it was for students and faculty. As you had kids who were uninterested and unmotivated. Teachers who were burnt out, scared, or don’t care and the unions and powers that be whose hands are tied or want them to do the best that they can with what they have yet offer no hope.

Now, while this film isn’t as sharp or necessarily as heavy as that film they do share a kinship. As well as with films like THE HOSPITAL and NETWORK (both of those written by Paddy Chayefsky) these are meant to be more ensemble films with a central figure in the lead who is riding on both sides until the end. Where they finally have to show where they stand and make some kind of difference even if ultimately lose.

This film is interesting as it can be funny. Especially pinpointing Richard Mulligan’s character, a teacher who gets into character to inspire his students and actually gets through to them. Before finding out he is an escaped mental patient.

What keeps the film lively is that one minute it can be gritty and dealt with seriously but then the next goes for a laugh that is more character-based comedy and less broad. 

Though there are many characters this film mainly focuses on Nick Nolte who is burnt out it actually seems to be the rare teacher who gives a damn. Though he wants to be a team player he has a reckless rebelliousness to him.

This role fits note to a The cuts an imposing figure but comes off quite intellectual. He is rugged throughout and tries his best but whenever he seems to be getting somewhere he has another bureaucratic door slammed in his face. This is a vintage performance from him where he is unpredictable but lively throughout. 

Nick Nolte is a famous actor. For me, he is an actor I discovered while looking for somebody else. He usually starred or Co-Starred in movies I initially watched for some other actor who was in the film for instance 48 HOURS I watched for Eddie Murphy and he co-Starred in it. I watched DOWN & OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS for Bette Midler he Co-Starred in it. I watched this film initially to see Ralph Macchio. He made this before KARATE KID, but I discovered it after he starred in that film.

The film has a recognizable cast. That looking back is impressive and all out to good use. The town of the film does become more serious after the death of a character.

Watching the film these days barely raises an eyebrow. But I remember when first seeing it felt scandalous like an expose almost. As it seems to try to shine a light on the problems of the then-current education system. Some of those problems still exist and some have gotten worse. It seems to try to take a bite but there is so much to chew it can only get to a certain amount of pieces presented.

This is a film that is worth watching to see how a film can make a point and bring up issues. By being gritty but also offering a light touch to round out and let the audience off somewhat.

GANGSTER SQUAD (2013)

It’s 1949 Los Angeles, and gangster Mickey Cohen has moved in, with the intention of controlling all criminal activity in the city. He has bought local judges and police, and no one is willing to cross him or testify against him. Everyone except Seargant John O’Mara, a former World War II soldier, whose goal is to settle with his family in a peaceful Los Angeles. Police Chief William Parker decides to form a special unit whose mission is to take down Cohen, and chooses O’Mara to lead the unit. O’Mara chooses 4 cops and asks another cop and vet, Jerry Wooters to join him but Wooters is not interested. But when he witnesses the murder of a young boy by Cohen’s people, he joins them, and they decide to take apart Cohen’s organization. Cohen wonders if a rival is going after him, but eventually he realizes it’s the cops.
